Mentioned for the first time in 1298, St. Mary’s Church was built from 1360 to 1380 and destroyed probably by the collapse of the high spire between 1382 and 1384. In 1416 and 1417 the western part of the church was constructed; a 151 m high spire, resting on a 14 m deep lying oak grid, was completed in 1478. It was, however, destroyed by a stroke of lightning in 1647 and replaced by a new 104 m high spire in 1708.
