Built in the middle of the 15th century, the altar from the borough of Semlow finally found its place in 1992 in the neo-Gothic refectory in the Choir Loft of St. Mary’s Church. In 1878 the Holbein brothers from Berlin renewed and refurbished it with lavish ornaments by applying polychrome techniques of the 19th century. It was then transferred to the graveyard chapel in Semlow. The Byzantine middle shrine and its side wings were restored from 1992 to 1999. Although the altar-statues, which have a lively effect, stand separately, they are clearly linked with one another in the presentation of their postures. According to one theory, the Semlow altar already possibly belonged to St. Mary’s Church in earlier times. |
